Newsgathering standards

One newsroom, two desks, the same discipline

Our national news desk and our entertainment desk work under one editorial policy. Every claim is checked against named sources, documents, or on-record statements before it is published, and what is still developing is labeled as such.

Reporting on film, television, and the industry that finances them is held to the same standard as coverage of politics. We look at the work, the business decisions, and the people involved, and we do not treat celebrity gossip as reporting.

Celebrity interviews

On-the-record profiles and longform features

Interviews are conducted on the record and are edited for accuracy, not for effect. Subjects are told how their remarks will be used, and quotations are checked against recordings before publication.

On-the-record standards

Every quotation is attributed and confirmed. Off-the-record material is not published as a quote, and any agreed conditions are stated plainly in the piece.

Ethics and consent

Subjects can review factual details about their own statements. Personal matters outside the public work are left out unless they bear directly on the reporting.

Longform profiles

Feature interviews take the time needed to examine a body of work, its context, and the industry forces behind it, rather than chasing a single headline moment.
